Privacy Policy
Last updated: 9 June 2026
BoatLaunch (boatlaunch.app) is a directory of boat ramps and launch conditions. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your rights over it. We try to collect as little as possible.
What we collect
- Account. When you sign in, our authentication provider (WorkOS, including the Google sign-in option) gives us your email address and, if available, your name and profile picture.
- Things you create. Ramps you save, edits and photos you submit, ramp claims, and messages you send to ramp operators.
- Location. If you grant location permission, your device position is used in your browser to centre the map. We do not store it on our servers unless you act on it (for example by saving a ramp or submitting a location).
- Technical. Standard server logs (IP address, browser, timestamps) and privacy-first, cookie-less analytics (aggregate page views, no cross-site tracking, no advertising profiles).
Cookies
We use a sign-in session cookie (essential, to keep you logged in) and a small cookie that remembers your chosen language. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
How we use your data
- To provide the service and remember your saved ramps and settings.
- To send notifications you opt into (operator messages and launch-window alerts). You can turn these off at any time.
- To review submissions for quality and abuse. This includes automated checks by an AI model; a human makes the final call on edge cases.
- To keep the service secure and prevent misuse.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We use a small number of service providers who process data on our behalf:
- WorkOS — sign-in and account identity.
- Fly.io — application hosting and database.
- Cloudflare R2 — storage for photos you upload.
- Stormglass — weather and marine forecasts. We send ramp coordinates, not your identity.
- OpenAI — automated moderation of submissions and satellite-image enrichment. We do not send your account details.
- Map and imagery providers (such as Esri, USGS, swisstopo) — their tiles load directly in your browser, subject to their own terms.
Retention
We keep account data while your account is active. Content you contribute (edits, photos, messages) is retained as part of the service. You can ask us to delete your account and associated personal data at any time.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under the EU GDPR and the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection), you have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to certain processing. To exercise any of these, email privacy@boatlaunch.app.
Children
BoatLaunch is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
We may update this policy. Material changes will be reflected in the "last updated" date above.
